"Dick Whittington" - from l to r The Cat (Julian Clary), Dick Whittington (Kevin Bishop), The Dame (Richard Wilson)
The fourth of the ITV Xmas Pantomimes - “Jack And The Beanstalk” (1998), “Cinderella” (1999), “Aladdin” (2000), ITV commissioned another Christmas pantomime from writer Simon Nye - Dick Whittington.
The show was recorded at The Wimbledon Theatre over two days - each day having a matinee and an evening performance - and the best takes were cut together for the TV version. It has to be admitted that the final performance of the second day was a little “light-hearted”. The show was broadcast on New Year’s Day 2002.
Highlights of the show include Mark Williams' swordfighting, Alderman Fitzwarren’s patter song, an interlude with Harry Hill as the Ship’s Painter and the obligatory water-sloshing scene with Paul Merton & Julian Clary.
The show has been repeated pretty much every Xmas since the first transmission.
